Over the weekend, people in Waterloo Region dug in and donated enough food to provide more than 74,000 meals.
Almost 53,000 pounds of food was collected at 35 sites during the one-day Dig In food drive organized by the Food Bank of Waterloo Region and other local food banks.
The spring drive is held to ensure the food bank shelves are stocked throughout the summer months, when food is distributed through 100 agencies and programs.
Wendi Campbell, executive director of the Food Bank, travelled from site to site on Saturday visiting volunteers and supporters of Dig In.
“I didn’t think it was possible, but they surprised me once again with their commitment to ensuring no one in Waterloo Region will go hungry,” she said.
“What a great way to lead into Hunger Awareness Week.”
Every day this week people working, living or volunteering amidst hunger will blog about their experiences at nhawwaterloo.wordpress.com.
