De Boer’s treasures

By John De Boer

Hockey is back at Maple Leaf Gardens in downtown Toronto. The Gardens has undergone a major transformation, and is now a four-level multi-use building.

Loblaw Companies, owners of the building, occupy the ground floor, where you’ll find the original centre ice, marked with a large red dot.

High up on the wall inside the main entrance is a huge maple leaf made from the original blue-section seats. From there, you can take the escalator up to Joe Fresh or the liquor store.

The top two levels house Ryerson University’s Mattamy Athletic Centre. During my visit, the Ryerson Rams were hosting the Laurier Golden Hawks, with Laurier player Derek Holden heading to the penalty box.

The rebirth of this building represents a tremendous partnership between Galen Weston of Loblaw Companies, Peter Gilgan, founder and CEO of Mattamy Homes, Ryerson University and the Canadian government.

John De Boer lives in Kitchener and enjoys daytripping off the beaten path.
