New exhibits in place at two art galleries

With a new year underway, new exhibits are on display at the KW Art Gallery, while today marks the last day for an exhibit at Homer Watson House and Gallery.

On exhibit at KWAG are Another Victory Over the Sun and Let’s Glow, while Embark is ending its run as the featured attraction at Homer Watson.

Another Victory Over the Sun is a collaboration between seven artists. Its title references Victory Over the Sun, a 1913 opera which celebrated the power of human creativity to invent new worlds.

Specific works in Another Victory Over the Sun include Spencer Finch’s Between the Moon and the Sea, the Melanie Smith film Xilitla: Incidents of Misalignment and a combination of illusion and architecture created by Scott Johnson’s glass sculpture and Erin Shirreff’s video projection.

Other artists featured in the exhibit include Miguel Calderon, Juan Munoz and David Zimmer.

Housed in KWAG’s Eastman space, Let’s Glow presents an exhibition of pure imagination in the dark, anchored by the Crystal Kings, a series of brightly coloured fluorescent creatures which resemble crystalline rock structures similar to those found in caves.

Over at Homer Watson House and Gallery, Embark is the culmination of a semester’s work for the senior art class at Eastwood Collegiate Institute under teacher Sandra Bethell.

The name Embark was chosen because it represents the beginning of a lifetime of self-driven artistic expression and a shift into the professional art world for the students, a process which will be pushed forward through their first gallery show.

The Kitchener-Waterloo Society of Artists display their annual juried exhibition at the gallery starting Feb. 4.
