Free the Children wants your common cents

The Royal Canadian Mint officially begins phasing out the penny on Feb. 4, and Free the Children wants them.

In the fall of 2012, at We Day events across Canada including one in Kitchener, Free the Children and RBC announced the We Create Change campaign.

It challenges Canadians to collect and donate their pennies as part of a year-long water initiative which has a goal of providing 100,000 people with permanent sources of clean water.

For the entire week Feb. 4 to Feb. 9, Canadians can bring any amount of pennies in any kind of container to any RBC branch across Canada, to donate to the We Create Change campaign.

One billion people live without access to fresh drinking water. A permanent source of clean drinking water can be provided for one person for $25, or 2,500 pennies.
